Have you ever lost a lot of work due to a system crash?

I have an hp laptop which I use for my design work... It has some great gear and it works well enough for my needs only problem is these laptops have a tendency to overheat and shut down really infrequently and yesterday I lost two days of work because Flash and Illustrator doesn't have an auto-save and no recovery options for when your computer overheats and shuts off... Anyone else had this happen to them?

Yeah it happens to the best of us.

I was once a few sentences off finishing a 10 page essay in word and my computer froze. I restarted it and I went about recovering the auto save wrong and it was lost to me forever.

Just goes to show it always pays off to be careful and save.

Ugh, yes! I've had the same thing happen to me while using Illustrator, but not because the system crashed -- because I forgot to plug my laptop in (duh) and the battery tanked. After that, I went looking online to see if there's any way to auto-save on Illustrator.

I found out there is! It takes a little work, which is slightly annoying -- but it can be done using the actions palette. I'm not sure if you've every used that, I know I didn't for the longest time.

Anyway -- here's a tutorial on how to set it up. It may save you a lot of stress in the future!

Interesting. I never knew you could do that. One note on that tutorial, though...you should probably set it up to auto-save as a copy, so you don't accidentally overwrite your file with changes that you may not want to keep.

I wonder if they've included the auto-save feature in Adobe Illustrator CS6? I've downloaded the suite, but haven't yet gotten around to playing with much aside from Photoshop.

The only possible annoying thing about that is that if you have a slow computer then illustrator can take agesssss to save, so if it's doing that all the time then it could become a real pain in the ass especially if you're really concentrating on something.

Wont be a problem for me though with my new Mac :)

I'm blesses and fortunate enough to say that has never happened to me. I've lose some work because I might've forgot to save it in more than one place. However, I at least usually try to save my most recent project online and offline just in case. You never know. :) Know what I mean?

Thank God no! It's the worst though. It's happened to a few friends of mind. I had to help someone redo a project in exchange for a case of beer once. LOL
